By the way, the name Herzberg has nothing to do with "heart" – it actually comes from the German word for "deer" (Hirsch). As is often the case in the German language, the name evolved over time from Hirschberg to Hirzberg and eventually to Herzberg.
Sadly, the colleagues from Frankfurt didn’t spot any deer on their hike through the woods, but they were rewarded with stunning views of the Frankfurt skyline.
Many, many steps later, they finally reached their destination. The reward? A glass (or two) of Äppelwoi (apple wine) served in a traditional Bembel (a ceramic jug) and drunk, as is only right, from a Geripptes – the distinctive ribbed glass used in Hesse. To go with it, they had Handkäs mit Musik. If you’re not quite sure what that is – don’t worry, even a few of the less seasoned Hessians in the team had never heard of it. This local cheese delicacy is served with a generous helping of onions and caraway seeds. And as for the “music” – well, with that many onions, you can probably guess.
Well-fed and a little wiser when it comes to the culinary customs of Hesse, the Frankfurt team made their leisurely way back down Herzberg – perhaps rolling just a bit.
